You've spent countless hours honing your technique, setting up your website and researching unique and interesting content. You've posted over ten blogs and have told all your friends and family but still, your blog is getting no more than a few hits a day. A scenario like this is all too common and for bloggers who are writing predominantly for other people's enjoyment rather than their own; it's difficult not to feel like throwing in the towel.
Fear not however, while your analytics may be showing a slump at the moment, there's plenty you can be doing to quickly and easily boost the awareness surrounding your blog. Here's three top tips to get you started:
1. Get involved with social media
Making sure your blog is social media optimised is a great way of spreading the word and also allows readers to like, tweet and share content they find interesting with their circle of friends as well. Social media widgets are often free to add and make your content a mere click away from social sharing. Furthermore, some people may prefer to follow a Twitter account than signing up to an RSS feed which means Tweeting and sharing your latest blog post via social media ensures everyone who is interested knows exactly when new content is available.
2. Reciprocal linking
The theory of 'I'll scratch your back, if you scratch mine' is alive and well in the Internet and is especially useful for bloggers in need of better exposure. Track down a handful of blogs on similar topics or themes, or perhaps even those that are just entertaining or well written. If possible, content the creators or contributors to these blogs as a means of offering a link from your blog to theirs. Out of courtesy, some blogs will reciprocate and point a link back to your blog; often via the 'blog roll' feature.
3. Paid advertising
Reciprocal linking can only be used so often and is not practiced by all blogs. In this instance you may have to invest a little extra momentum into your blog awareness campaign by running a small paid search campaign via Google Adwords or another search engine provider. Paid search needn't be expensive and is a great way to bring in completely new traffic based on keywords relating to your blog. For example, if your blog is a niche blog loking at HR topics and techniques you would bid on terms such as HR blog and the like.
Social media, reciprocal links and paid advertising are all quick and easy ways to ensure your blog gets more hits. So what's stopping you from advertising your blog today?
