Having a job when you're trying to start your own business can be both positive and negative. I still have mixed feelings about this. Working for someone else can be crucial to your success in the long run. In fact, I believe that everyone should work as an employee for at least a year in their young adult life in order to appreciate what that means and requires. Then you can go on to work in a family business or start your own as an entrepreneur.
The problem that arises is that many people become comfortable in their job over time. This can mean that you no longer have the ambition and the drive to do what it will take to start your own business. This happened to me for many years when I worked as a classroom teacher. I loved working with the children and knew that I would receive a paycheck for the same amount once a month. This made me complacent when it came to taking the time necessary to doing something on my own. It wasn't until the situation at work became unbearable that I was again ready to go after my own dream of working from home on my computer.
Look closely at your present situation. With the economy in full recovery at this point it may be tempting for you to stay at your job and make the best of it. Think about the way that you are justifying and rationalizing this action. When I finally did this it was amazing to me the story I had created about why I had to stay working as an employee instead of leaving that false sense of security behind to fulfill my own hopes and dreams.
A job is never a certainty. So many events can occur that will be beyond your control over time. We have all heard the stories of people who worked for twenty years or more at a company and were then let go, long before they could receive the financial incentives and benefits they had counted on for their entire adult lives. You deserve more than to be in this position after giving any company the best years of your life.
Start a small business online just to get started. Once you see that you can earn even a small amount of money as an online entrepreneur you will be convinced that you have more control over your own life that you ever thought possible.
